Jubilee Metals has gained full control of the Kabwe project, in Zambia, by increasing its interest in the project to 87.5%. While Jubilee has the option to acquire 100% of the Kabwe project, Aim-listed BMR retains a maximum of 12.5% of the generated earnings.
Four more cities in northeast China's Liaoning province have abandoned their pursuit of alumina projects amid public environmental concerns, after Chaoyang last week scrapped plans to build the world's biggest alumina refinery. The new cancellations - announced in recent days by the cities of Fengcheng, Fuxin, Gaizhou and Huludao - mean projects designed to produce over 18.5-million tonnes of the substance used to make aluminium metal will not go ahead as planned.
State-owned electricity producer Eskom has confirmed that it has entered into a sales incentive pilot programme with nine large industrial customers in a bid to stabilise sales to electricity-intensive industries. The two-year sales incentive pilot programme, which commenced on June 1, has the potential to stimulate additional sales of up to 5 TWh and generate revenue of R3-billion over two years, the utility tells Engineering News Online.
Diversified miner Vedanta Resources on Monday announced that it had delivered strong earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) and drove steady margins in the first quarter of the 2019 financial year. The margins, the miner highlighted, were driven by record volumes in aluminium, higher production in oil and gas, as well as supportive commodity prices.
Aim-listed mining company Vast Resources, its 80%-subsidiary African Consolidated Resources (AFCR) and Romanian State-owned Baita, the holder of the Baita Plai licence, have submitted a joint formal application to Romania’s National Agency for Mineral Resources (ANRM) for the grant to AFCR of an association licence. The association licence will give AFCR the right to mine at Baita Plai, in Romania, which has a 1.8-million-tonne copper/silver/zinc/lead/gold/tungsten/molybdenum orebody.
JSE-listed Merafe Resources’ attributable ferrochrome production from the Glencore-Merafe chrome venture for the six months ended June 30, decreased by 2.3% to 211 000 t, with production for the period equivalent to an installed capacity utilisation of 88%. Total production costs per tonne of ferrochrome increased by 4.8%, compared with December 31, last year, mainly as a result of a 5.4% increase in electricity in April, as well as an increase in reductant costs, which arose from a change in mix owing to availability.
