Privately held Dundas Mining is restarting its Avebury nickel mine in Tasmania early next year and Swiss trading house Transamine has secured the offtake, a source familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Avebury, which had most recently been owned by China-backed MMG, was sold to Dundas last year and has been on care and maintenance since 2009.

The new silver bullion Krugerrand went on sale this week and is expected to generate significant interest, says Prestige Bullion, a joint venture between Rand Refinery and the South African Mint. The silver Krugerrand is Prestige Bullion’s first foray into silver and its introduction makes this the first time in the Krugerrands’ 51-year history, that the coin is produced in a metal other than 22 ct gold in unlimited mintage.

A court hearing has been scheduled for August 10 to consider a provisional liquidation application against Kareevlei Mining, a subsidiary of Aim-listed BlueRock Diamonds. The application was brought by former BlueRock CEO Riaan Visser.

NYSE-listed fertiliser company Mosaic on Monday reported second-quarter earnings of $97.9-million, on net sales of $2.2-billion and increased its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) range on strong underlying business performance and lower full-year taxes. ussia's Rusal, the world's largest aluminium producer outside China, has started shutting down production at one of its smaller plants as a result of US sanctions on the company, Rusal representatives said on Monday. Operations at the Nadvoitsky aluminium smelter in Russia's Karelia region cannot continue as the plant lost access to its end market and to a steady supply of raw materials ever since Washington imposed sanctions on Rusal on April 6, the company said.

Alcoa Corp on Monday asked the US.Commerce Department to exempt from tariffs its purchases of 40 000 metric tons of Canadian aluminum used to make beverage cans, adding to thousands of requests for such relief. According to documents posted to its website, Alcoa said no US aluminum producer can meet its specification needs and quality requirements for rolling slabs used at its Warrick, Indiana plant to produce aluminum for can manufacturers.
